Purple and Pear Original Oil Painting
Purple and Pear is part of my Ukiyo-e flower series.
I very much appreciate Japanese art with their block colours and hard edges. Ukiyo-e is a Japanese word that means ‘pictures of the floating world.’ The floating world refers to the pleasure quarters of Japan in the 17th - 19th centuries, where one might experience beautiful women, actors, sumo wrestlers, travel, the landscape, and see flora and fauna. It was said that to enjoy the floating world one must be ‘going with the flow.’ To me that means taking notice of being in a certain relaxed attitude to be able to appreciate the simple pleasures in life. To notice the beauty of the every day things that go on around us.
Purple and Pear was actually inspired by the colour yellow and the calm and happy feeling it has on the mind. The muted purple background was applied in contrast to make the yellow note of the flowers sing and stand out.
