'Nessun Dorma' Original Oil Painting

$350.00
Sold Out

I had another round out of these Dahlias and decided to go with more of a classical approach starting with what they call an ‘open grissaille’. Essentially a monochromatic underpainting that was still quite wet when i started in with the second layer of colour. Although it takes a bit longer I find it is a much more relaxing approach that gives you time to figure out the light and drawing first without the complexity of colour.

Again i was inspired by Henri Fantin-Latour, who was inspired by the Baroque Dutch and italian painters and they in turn inspired by the painters of the rennaisance and i guess it goes back and back until you get to those cave paintings out in france and spain and wherever they are and then probably back some more. It’s a bit like time travel. Looking at a historical piece of art gives me a sense of what life might have been like back in those days and what that artist was thinking. The greats would have had many of the same questions as us artists do today. Is it too light or too dark? Should i put an apple over here or maybe a lemon?  Michaelangelo decided to paint god’s face! Maybe that’s why everyone started thinking god was some old guy in the sky!

12 x 16 inch oil on canvas.

Made with artist grade winsor and newton oil paints.
